When I first put this list together in 2003 I found 48 marine surveyors in Ontario. We are now up to 181 and growing steadily. I know there are a lot more out there because I keep hearing new names but it is a moving target as the part timers come and go. I think it's growing so rapidly because it's such an easy business to get into and believe it or not most insurance companies will accept reports from anyone who had the $50.00 for business cards. I have the business card of one Ontario surveyor which reads "ABYC Certified Marine Surveyor". While ABYC is a legitimate and important organization, they do not certify marine surveyors. Many of these listed below are part timers who are also auto wholesalers, construction workers, aluminum siding salesmen, insurance adjusters, disc jockey and a few that not only survey but sell and repair boats and one who advertises on a brokers web site. Would'nt you prefer to deal with someone whose livelihood depends on doing it right ?.

As they so frequently refer to ABYC® Standards, I don't understand how anyone can survey to the legal requirements of Transport Canada Small Craft Construction Standards without a thorough understanding of those standards. This should be the first criteria for a surveyor and an "ABYC® Standards Certified" surveyor is even better.

AMS® (Accredited Marine Surveyor) is a registered trademark of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors®. All SAMS® surveyors are members of ABYC®. NAMS is another legitimate Certifying body although they are mostly focused on commercial work.
