Marine Surveyors Newsletter - Latest edition, Mar 19, 2013 : Seminars, Stolen Boats and the OBBC
All you need to know about me - including my fee schedule, credentials, testimonials and a list of all 391 powerboats and 337 sailboat models I've surveyed or delivered and what you should know before you hire me.

All you need to know about marine surveyors and surveys
.
A list of every SAMS® marine surveyor in Canada and another with all 242 marine surveyors in Ontario (SAMS or not) with their credentials and contact info. Also "10 Questions to Ask Your Marine Surveyor" and how to find the right surveyor if you are buying a boat is the US.

Marine Survey 101.
Over 100 photographs and instructions on how to inspect a boat. Save yourself the cost of multiple marine surveys by finding the "deal killers" yourself before you hire a marine surveyor.

Buying a Boat ... if the lobotomy didn't work
-
All of the articles and links on this page have to do with searching for the right boat and protecting your money as the deal proceeds.

Buying a Used Boat in The US - Do you know how to protect your deposit in case the deal goes south ? Do you know how to avoid buying a polished up hurricane boat ? Do you know how to find out if the boat was stolen ? Do you know how to do a lien search ? Do you know how to de-list a USCG Documented boat before it can be licensed or registered in Canada ? Do you know which boats you will have to pay duty on as well as sales tax ?

AC & DC Boat electrical systems
generate more negative comments in my marine survey reports than any other onboard system and cause more fires, explosions and "electric shock drownings" than most people realize. Here we talk about AC, and DC systems, stray current and electrolysis, lightning protection, bonding, grounding, galvanic corrosion, battery and charger installations, how to convert your old fixtures to LED's on the cheap, G.F.C.I's, inverters, polarity indicators and pretty much anything that has to do with electricity on boats.

All about boat systems and structure
including "Marine Maintenance For non-Idiots", blisters, osmosis, moisture meter mythology, safe boat propane installations, much overlooked maintenance issues, biodiesel for boats, running gear alignment, raw water flow detectors, stuffing boxes, cutless bearings and pretty much anything mechanical on the boat.

Sailboat rigging
is another often neglected area. With more southern boats being sold in Canada than ever before you should be aware of the pitfalls of corrosion and old overworked standing rigging. I've included a winch rebuilding "how to" and a rig inspection guide put out by USCG after a few notorious incidents on charter catamarans.

Not the Usual Boat Safety Stuff
.
Carbon Monoxide poisoning, gasoline fumes, propane leaks, fire ports, "electric shock drowning" (more common in fresh water marinas) you will never let your kids swim in a marina or near a boat again. All of the articles and links on this page have to do with things on your boat that can hurt you and spoil more than just your day on the water.

Boater Training or lack thereof
.
From diesel engine and electrical systems courses, navigation, rules of the road and boat handling (power and sail), where to get the help you need to maximize enjoyment and keep safe on the water. The broker is wrong ... its not just like driving a car and CAA is not coming !

Cruising the Great Lakes, Ontario, ICW, Bahamas, Erie and New York canals
.
Almost all of our cruising has been from Duluth MN through the Great Lakes, the New York State Canal system, ICW, Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas. All of the articles and links on this page have to do with cruising these areas and include a "Primer for First Times Heading South", "Cruising the Erie Canal", a couple of of our cruise logs, a photo log of our southern cruising and links to a number of worthwhile websites for those planning the trip.

Marine services in southern Ontario, parts, marine stuff
.
Everything on this page has to do with the people you will need for boat maintenance, marine insurance, and where to get what you need and who you can call for boat help in southern Ontario.

Love to Learn about boats & odds n' ends
. Too cold in January to work on your boat ? Kill some time with this mixed bag of links and articles for those with a desire to know more about boats and boating from an AIS tracking website, lightning protection, an animated knot tying demo, video docking game, a marine surveyors lexicon and a sail calculator.

Boat reviews, specifications and boating chat forums
. This page provides links to pages of boat reviews, and specifications both power and sail. There is something on the web for every boat out there, I think I have found most of them for you. I also have a list of boating chat forums where I hang out when its too cold to survey.

The Law, maritime & admiralty
.
Some of this stuff is not as dry as you'd think. From legally required construction standards, collision regulations, electrical regulations, CE standards, Canada Shippng Act and Transportation Safety Board marine investigations and a law suit against a marine surveyor.

Marine insurance
.
A list marine insurance companies operating in Ontario and a few things you should know about boat policies, terminology and differences of cash value vs. actual value, latent defect, freeze damage and more.
